Alabama NORML is a non-profit grassroots organization with volunteers across multiple counties and cities. We advocate for the legalization and responsible use of cannabis in Alabama. Our objectives include decriminalization, full medical access, patient rights, reparatory legalization, and sustainability.
Alabama NORML's mission is to educate about and reform marijuana laws. We do this by providing information regarding the current status of laws concerning cannabis in the state of Alabama and the United States at large; The medical, legal, economic, environmental, and civil arguments for a more reasonable treatment of cannabis in the laws of Alabama and the United States.
Alabama NORML supports NORML's mission of moving public opinion sufficiently to achieve the repeal of marijuana prohibition so that the responsible use of marijuana by adults is no longer subject to criminal sanctions.
The policy options for cannabis regulation as delineated in the NORML Official “Policy Statement”.
We are working to ensure the consumer maintains a voice in marijuana law reform while educating our community about cannabis, benefits of legalization and its potential medical and industrial uses.
Alabama NORML aims to reduce the criminal penalties for marijuana possession and use in Alabama. This includes advocating for the removal of criminal records for non-violent marijuana-related offenses, reducing or eliminating fines for marijuana offenses, and decreasing the severity of sentences for marijuana-related crimes.
Alabama NORML supports the implementation of a comprehensive medical marijuana program in Alabama, which would allow individuals with qualifying medical conditions to access marijuana-based treatments under the supervision of a healthcare provider. We believe that patients should have the right to choose their own medical treatments, and that the use of marijuana can be a safe and effective alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals.
In addition to advocating for medical access to cannabis, Alabama NORML supports the protection of patients' rights to use cannabis for medical purposes, including the right to home grow. This also includes advocating for employment protections, such as the right to use cannabis outside of work hours without fear of discrimination or persecution in the workplace.
Alabama NORML believes that the legalization of marijuana should be accompanied by reparative measures that address the harms caused by marijuana prohibition, particularly for communities of color. This includes advocating for the expungement of criminal records for non-violent marijuana offenses and reinvestment in communities that have been disproportionately affected by the war on drugs.
Finally, Alabama NORML is committed to promoting sustainable practices in the cannabis industry, including the use of renewable energy sources, the reduction of waste and pollution, and the protection of natural resources. We believe that a sustainable approach to the cannabis industry is necessary to protect the environment and ensure that the benefits of legalization are enjoyed by future generations. In addition, we also support the promotion of research on hemp for sustainability purposes.
