The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) was established through legislation in the 2021 session of the Alabama legislature and subsequently signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey. The AMCC is composed of fourteen board members appointed by key state authorities, including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senate Pro Tem, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, State Health Officer, Attorney General, and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
The AMCC board members bring diverse expertise in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, agricultural lending and practices, law enforcement, legal compliance, and mental health.
The primary goal of the AMCC is to facilitate the implementation and administration of medical cannabis laws in Alabama. This involves ensuring registered qualified patients have access to medical cannabis-derived from cannabis cultivated within the state. Additionally, the AMCC holds the responsibility of granting licenses to facilities engaged in the processing, transportation, testing, or dispensing of medical cannabis.
The AMCC has been granted the authority to administer and enforce the laws and regulations governing medical cannabis in Alabama.

When will medical cannabis product be available?

Beginning September 1, 2022, the Commission will begin to accept medical cannabis business applications. Once the business licenses have been awarded, physicians may begin the certification process to recommend medical cannabis to qualified patients.

Health insurers are not required to cover the cost of medical cannabis.
When can I apply for a license to grow and/or manufacture medical cannabis?
Beginning September 1, 2022, a person may apply to the commission for a license for an integrated facility or for a license as a cultivator processor, secure transporter, state testing laboratory or dispensary.
Is it illegal to use or sell medical marijuana for purposes other than what’s allowed under the law?
Yes – it is illegal to distribute, possess, manufacture, or use medical cannabis or a medical cannabis product that has been diverted from a registered qualified patient, a registered caregiver, or a licensed cultivator, processor, secure transporter, dispensary, or a state testing laboratory.
